If you ever picked up one of Mirtha Michelle’s books or have come across one of her quotes on Instagram, I can bet your were completely drawn in through her words, because this lady is empowering in every sense of the meaning! It takes so much to put yourself out there and share your feelings about everyone that has ever step foot in your life, and even more to transform them into poetry that empowers others through words written as only Mirtha Michelle can do.

Mirtha is a Dominican born actress and poet, her writing comes natural to her as she started journaling and writing poetry at a very young age. Her two best selling books “Letters, To The Men I Have Loved” and “Elusive Loves” are touching and real experiences of love and loss from many aspects of her life and relationships. But it’s her third book recently released this week, “Letter’s to Women Like Me” that I find completely empowering and relate to on so many levels. I’m so honored that I had the opportunity to ask Mirtha about her writing, her inspiration and her goals moving forward!

M: What made you decide to write your book “Letters to the Men I Have Loved” and how have the experiences you write about helped you personally? I think it’s interesting that book is not just about significant others but male family influences too?

Mirtha Michelle: I was inspired to write Letters, To The Men I Have Loved because I had a feeling of wanting to heard by these men that influenced my life so much.

M: I think it’s so interesting that you started to express yourself as a young girl writing in journals and sometimes in the palm of your hand. You described in your book that you wrote to release what you had bottled up inside as a result of the strength your mother taught you. Have you always practiced this task of writing to release emotion? How has journaling and writing helped you throughout your life and was it hard to write in your most vulnerable moments?

Mirtha Michelle: I bottled things in since I was a little girl, journaling and writing helped me express those feelings without anyone’s judgement. To me in my vulnerable moments bring out the best writing in me. When I’m aching and I feel the burden on my shoulders. and I need to release it,  this is why to me writing is sometimes completely necessary for me to live.

If my lessons & mistakes can make another woman stronger & wiser then it was all worth it. ~MMCM

M: In your interview with Latina Magazine you described about how so many of us women get into a depression after a relationship, that it’s best to “Cry it out and put a stop to it” but I know from my own experience that we can go years reliving that pain of a failed relationship over and over again. You mentioned that we need to create good energy? What advice do you give to women still dwelling from a failed relationship?

Mirtha Michelle: If you dwell in a failed relationship, you can’t move on. But if you don’t analyze the failure of the relationship you can’t learn from it. You need to understand why it happened, understand why it fell apart. But also look forward to something better and not tarnish your future with the pain from your past.

M: I love your advice “when you accept yourself, then you start loving yourself” You also mentioned that one of your goals is to remind women that we are worth it! Your new book seems to be more about self empowerment. What was the inspiration to write your third book “Letters to Women Like Me”?

Mirtha Michelle: Women. The women in my life have been the biggest inspiration behind this book because they inspired questions I needed to ask about myself which consequently has led me to more growth and developing confidence as a woman.

M: I feel like readers will learn so much about you through your books because you really share some deep feelings and experiences that are very REAL! Tell us something we don’t know about Mirtha outside of the actress and author?

Mirtha Michelle: I am super funny. And most people think that i’m just a really deep person but i’m actually really silly and I’m really comfortable at making fun of myself.

M: I really believe in your advice about manifestation and thinking positive. It seems so simple yet so true. Is this something that you always practiced yourself? What is your best advice for us that still struggle with self love and positive thinking as it relates to having a successful relationship of any kind?

Mirtha: I think learning yourself takes work and time and until you realize that the relationship with yourself takes the same if not more quality time then you’ll struggle because you don’t know yourself. The moment you truly know yourself you’ll begin to accept yourself.

M: Tell me more about your new project “The Fourth Wave” I love that it’s a platform that women can feel empowered and inspired. How did this project come about and what will be the main content and goals for this platform?

Mirtha Michelle: I’ve wanted to impart some of the things that I’ve learned and I shared this desire with one of my best friends Jamie Barratta and she had the same yearning. So we decided to come together and form “The Fourth Wave”. It stands for the current wave of feminism were currently in. Our goal is to empower, inform and inspire the women of today.

I love the advice Mirtha’s mom gave to her “In life you want to take the positives from people and leave the negative outside the door” that’s amazing advice and just shows where her empowering words come from!

Mirtha also contributes to Róse Roundtable a production of Cinestar which is made up of the Saldana sisters Mariel, Cisely and Zoe. The Róse Roundtable shares everything from relationships to recipes and everything in between, it feels like you are a part of a girls night with some amazing ladies!
